Madison Nicole May

She/Her/Hers

My practice focuses on research topics of trauma, its physiological and psychological effects on the body and mind, and the relationships and spaces that house distress. I celebrate materiality and investigate histories of pattern making through methods of printmaking, digital light projection, soundscape, scent, and sculpture methods. I form cinematic spaces that provide a physical sculptural experience. This exemplifies the spatial and psychological phantom barriers that exist due to trauma. My work has a strangeness, a softness, and slowness that requires introspection and negotiation. Notions of intimacy, domesticy, and discomfort are connected through material, motif, and object dialogue in ways that are nuanced and gentle in their approach. How does trauma manifest itself internally? Through my practice, I am exploring ways to create visual language communicating these experiences.
